Penny filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 15, 2020 in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.txs.uscourts.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas<\/a> Case No. 20-20196.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company plan s to close 242 stores thorough 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two mall operators, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Simon Property Group<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brookfieldproperties.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brookfield Properties, LLC<\/a> purchased J.C.
